As per request, today I'm going to take you through my current skincare routine. If you'd like to know how I cleared my skin, click here. This is how I've managed to keep it clear:
I prefer to forgo using a generic cleanser in the morning. I found that cleansing both night and day irritated my skin, so warm water is all I use.
Moisturiser After many a sleepless night of trying to find the perfect moisturiser for my combination skin, I found aloe vera gel seemed to be the crowd favourite, and for good reason. Aloe vera gel is moisturising, soothing and healing.
I have yet to find affordable 100% aloe vera gel, so for now I use Palmer's Aloe Vera Gel. Find it at Dischem.
Makeup Remover I used to use coconut oil to remove my makeup, but slowly lost the motivation to do so as it added an extra five minutes to my shower time that I could never get back. That’s where Garnier’s Micellar Cleansing Water came in.
I take a cotton pad and start by removing my eye makeup first. You want to be gentle, because this area is not only sensitive to irritation but to wrinkles too.
As for my face, I remove as much foundation as possible, but don’t worry too much as I’m going to cleanse my face in the shower anyway.
Cleanser I’m a night shower-er, so this is where the nitty-gritty happens. I’m removing the stank of the day, so I have to be as thorough as possible while conserving water and taking no longer than five to ten minutes.
I use the Neutrogena Visibly Clear Pore & Shine Daily Wash to remove any leftover makeup or debris. It leaves my skin feeling squeaky clean without it feeling dry.
Toner I use a combination of rose water and witch hazel as a toner. Using a toner can moisturise, refresh and restore your skins pH balance, but I use it to remove access oil and help combat blemishes.
Because our bodies go through a "rebooting" process overnight, I prefer to use avocado oil to moisturise my skin. I use it because it makes my skin glow, but it is said to help fight against blemishes and signs of ageing.
Facial Massage A new step in my routine is massaging my face after my mum, I mean Santa, gave me one for Christmas. Since using The Body Shop Twin-Ball Facial Massager, I've noticed a difference in my skins elasticity and texture. This step is optional, considering I wouldn't pay R250 for a dildo-in-disguise on my student budget, but if you can afford it I would recommend you give it a try.
Treatments I’m impatient, so when I see a pimple, it has 24 hours to vacate the premises before I either pop that b*tch or ask it to start paying rent. Depending on the type of pimple I use one of two products: Vicks if it’s a cystic pimple, or toothpaste if it’s got a head.
I try to use a face mask at least twice a week, but that number increases or decreases depending on what state my skin is in. I mix honey, turmeric and cinnamon together, apply it to my skin and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. I explain why I use honey and turmeric in this post.
